ESG
At Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. From preserving biodiversity to reducing waste, conserving energy, and supporting our local communities, we are committed to responsible hospitality. Through innovative initiatives and eco-friendly practices, we strive to create a greener future while delivering exceptional experiences to our guests.

BIODIVERSITY
At Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel, we are committed to preserving and enhancing both urban and natural ecosystems. Our tranquil lakeside setting is complemented by beautifully curated gardens featuring a diverse range of native plants, supporting local wildlife and fostering biodiversity. We take great care in maintaining pollinator-friendly spaces, ensuring the health of vital ecosystems in the heart of the city.
Our team actively participates in environmental initiatives, including lakeside clean-ups and the promotion of sustainable practices within the hotel. We are also passionate about raising awareness and educating our guests and community on the importance of conserving natural resources for future generations.
By seamlessly blending luxury with sustainability, we create an eco-conscious environment where both nature and our guests can thrive.

WASTE REDUCTION INITATIVES
At Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel, we are dedicated to reducing waste and promoting sustainability across all departments. Our waste management strategy focuses on efficient resource use, responsible disposal, and recycling to ensure a positive environmental impact.
- Offices: We avoid disposable tableware, limit colour printing and copying, and prioritise digital communication to reduce paper usage. Recycled paper is used wherever possible, and the blank sides of used paper are repurposed for notes. Printing is minimised through double-sided printing options, and outdated electronic equipment is either recycled or donated to reduce e-waste.
- Engineering Department: We adhere to strict regulations for the safe storage and disposal of hazardous waste. Non-recyclable materials are managed responsibly, while recyclable electrical and electronic appliances are sent to certified e-waste recyclers. Regular maintenance of equipment extends its lifespan, minimising replacements and reducing waste.
- Food & Beverage: We actively monitor and manage food waste, repurposing scraps for composting or animal feed. Waste is segregated into clearly labelled containers, and staff are trained in proper waste separation. We minimise disposable tableware, opting for sustainable alternatives, while biodegradable organic waste is composted, and used cooking oil is converted into biodiesel. Purchasing decisions are based on actual needs to avoid excess, and suppliers who take back packaging are prioritised. Old furniture and linen are donated, and a first-in, first-out system is followed for food storage. In guest rooms, we provide waste separation facilities, and old bedding is repurposed as cleaning rags.
Through these initiatives, we strive to reduce waste at every level and foster a culture of sustainability throughout the hotel.

ENERGY SAVING INITIATIVES
- Efficient Lighting & Equipment: We use energy-saving bulbs in high-consumption areas and replace outdated lighting to significantly reduce electricity usage. Regular maintenance of electrical systems, including air conditioning and heating, ensures optimal performance. Energy-efficient appliances replace older models to minimise energy waste.
- Maximising Natural Resources: We make full use of natural light, adjusting workspaces accordingly. In the laundry, steam is recirculated to reduce fuel consumption for steam generation. Computers are switched off when not in use, and lighting fixtures are cleaned regularly for maximum efficiency.
- Eco-Conscious Kitchens: Hot water is used only when necessary, and kitchen equipment is powered on only when needed. Cooking practices are optimised by covering pots, defrosting food in refrigeration units instead of under running water, and operating ovens at full capacity. Energy-efficient kitchen appliances further reduce energy consumption without compromising food quality.
- Employee Engagement: Our staff are trained and encouraged to adopt energy-saving practices, ensuring a collective effort towards sustainability.

WATER CONSERVATION INITIATIVES
We are dedicated to responsible water management, implementing a range of conservation measures across all departments:
- Engineering: Water meters are installed in all departments to monitor usage. Regular maintenance prevents leaks, and automatic sprinkler systems operate during optimal hours to minimise evaporation. Flow regulators on taps and showerheads, along with low-flush toilets and self-closing taps, further enhance water efficiency.
- Housekeeping: Flow regulators on showerheads reduce water flow by up to 40%. Guests are encouraged to reuse linens and towels, with towel racks installed to facilitate this. Biodegradable cleaning agents are used to prevent water pollution, and our housekeeping team is trained in water conservation best practices.
- Laundry: Prewashes are eliminated where possible, and water-saving wash cycles are used. Machines operate at full load capacity to minimise cycles, and rinse water from lightly soiled laundry is reused. Modern, water-efficient machines have replaced outdated equipment, reducing water waste.
- Kitchen: Water flow is adjusted according to cleaning needs, and taps are not left running unnecessarily. Food is defrosted in refrigerators rather than under running water, and dirty dishes are soaked before washing to minimise water use. Flow regulators are installed on all kitchen taps, and dishwashers are used at full capacity to reduce cycles.

SUSTAINABLE PURCHASING PRACTICES
We prioritise environmentally friendly procurement to minimise our impact and support local communities:
- Energy-efficient and durable equipment with recyclable components is prioritised. Rechargeable batteries are used instead of disposable ones.
- We source food ingredients locally to support farmers and reduce carbon emissions.
- Disposable tableware, linens, and napkins are avoided in favour of high-quality, reusable materials.
- Purchases are made in appropriate quantities to reduce transportation and waste.
- Environmentally friendly cleaning products and sustainable table linens are used throughout the hotel.
- Guests are encouraged to participate in our green initiatives by selecting eco-friendly products and services.

EMISSION REDUCTION INITIATIVES
We are committed to minimising our environmental footprint through responsible energy and emissions management:
- We use low-sulphur fuel where required, reducing harmful emissions.
- Regular maintenance of air conditioning filters and refrigeration systems ensures efficient operation and prevents harmful refrigerant leaks.
- Halon-free fire extinguishers and firefighting systems are used to prevent ozone depletion.
- Guests are encouraged to engage in eco-friendly activities, such as using public transport or biking, with incentives such as complimentary meals, drinks, and gym access.
COMMUNITY PROJECTS

PASAL DIRIYA - NOURISHING FUTURE
At Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel, we are dedicated to making a meaningful difference in our community. Through our Pasal Diriya initiative, we support underprivileged schools in Colombo by providing dry rations to ensure students receive a nutritious meal.
Recognising the vital link between nourishment and learning, we donate essential food items each month, which are used in school kitchens to prepare wholesome lunches. By alleviating food insecurity, we help children focus on their education without the distraction of hunger.
This initiative is just one of the many ways we give back to the community, fostering a brighter and healthier future for the next generation. By uplifting children today, we help build a stronger, more sustainable society for tomorrow.
GOVERNANCE
We deeply believe in transparency, accountability, and ethical business practices. Our governance approach aims to ensure the responsible management of our hotels and resorts, fostering trust with stakeholders and nurturing a culture of integrity and compliance. We're dedicated to maintaining a robust governance structure that aligns with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
